DOUKADES

OTHER CAVES

On the rock wall between Doukades and Skripero with the Grava tou Noukou cave are more caves located.

In the book Doukades Kerkiras by Alexandros Alexakis (2007) is written about several caves in Doukades. The author wrote that in the large area of the old Kounoupenas wetlands, in the eroded forested areas, which end in Giatrones and around Vromolimni - Tzavrou, pytholite of typology - known from the Paleolithic age - was found. For the author it is evident that in the area of Doukades, the excavations of the prehistoric archaeologists, mainly in the caves of Vasilithras, reveal the findings of the Homo Sapiens. These caves of Vasilithras are the so called graves known by the names: Nianiiris cave or Anastasis cave and the Grava tou Noukou cave.

The author mentions also two other caves in his book, namely: Melissograva cave, located above Mylonas, which means above the ditch, and Grounograva cave (also called Grava tou Stathia cave or Grava tou Mania cave), located at Kouloumota, above the Coccorean’s ditch. Unfortunately their exact locations are not clear yet.
